From 1 April 2015, one of Europe’s largest bus and rail operators Abellio took over the operation of Scotland’s Railway Network Franchise ‘ScotRail’. Worth up to £6billion this is the single biggest contract awarded by the Scottish Government.
£7.85 per hour (rising to £8.05 per hour in October)

The franchise will see a number of new initiatives and investments launched, which will make train travel more attractive for people and visitors throughout Scotland.
An exciting element of the franchise is the creation of the Scotrail Alliance. The Alliance will bring the Abellio ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland Route organisations under one leadership team to deliver a joined up approach to delivering an improved rail service for the people of Scotland. Central to the success of the ScotRail Alliance will be the combined workforce of 7,000 spread across Scotland who are responsible for all aspects of the railway from maintaining the trains and infrastructure to delivering a consistently high level of service for the 86.3 million passenger journeys a year. The aim is to integrate the Abellio ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland Route teams to improve the overall customer experience. This will involve a major organisational restructure and the development and implementation of an overarching people strategy designed to create a “one team” approach within an engaged, empowered and developed workforce.
The successful intern will work directly to the Employee Engagement Manager and within the overall HR team to assist in the delivery of the key outputs aligned to the creation of the ScotRail Alliance and to deliverables that relate to the Abellio ScotRail franchise. These include:
• The restructuring of the Abellio ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland Route organisations to create the ScotRail Alliance
• The development and implementation of the ScotRail Alliance HR strategy
• The launch of the Employee Engagement programme that will support the development of the ScotRail Alliance into an integrated organisation, including the launch of key people processes.
• Building and maintaining a relationship of support and trust with the railway Trade Unions during a period of significant change.
There will be the potential to be involved in every aspect of the change programme from helping to shape the HR strategy to getting involved in employee relations.

Abellio ScotRail are looking for an enthusiastic, organised, and proactive individual who is prepared to get fully involved at an exciting and critical time for Scotland’s railways. The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with an interest in gaining both generalist HR experience and experience of organisational design and development, and change management. You will be CIPD qualified, at either Graduate/Associate/Student level.
You will be keen to learn and develop both new and existing skills. You should be well presented and professional with the drive to succeed. Flexibility, a can-do attitude and strong team work skills are essential.
