Simple Ways to Stay Healthy at Work

Hours and hours of sitting in your office chair and staring at a computer screen (or screens!) can be really bad for you. Here's some great ideas to stay healthy!

Walking and biking

If you have the option of walking or using your bike for your daily commute to work it is a fantastic option to conveniently build exercise into your routine. It can reverse potential problems caused by too much sitting at a desk and it is a great way to start your day (especially if you take the scenic route)!

Snack healthily

Having a snack or two throughout your work day boosts your metabolism and makes you less hungry before your lunch break. The best option, instead of having biscuits or crisps, is to have some fruit, nuts, yogurt or a low-sugar cereal bar instead.

Stay hydrated

Something as basic as water is easy to miss sometimes, but it’s simple to fix dehydration problems, Along with your coffee or tea keep a small bottle of water on your desk so you can have a drink to keep you hydrated whenever you feel like it.

Eat better

Try to take home-prepared food to work. This way, not only are you in full control of what you are eating but you can also have a plan for a balanced diet for the week ahead.

If you can, it's good to avoid eating lunch at your desk or eating while looking at your computer screen. Take some time off, change your surroundings and give yourself some time to rest and relax.

Stretch often

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day can be hard on your body and mind. Research has shown that a bit of stretching can have a very positive effect on you. Not only does it improve posture and flexibility but it will also leave you refreshed and calmer which may increase productivity.

Take the stairs instead of the lift/escalator. It is easy to make taking the stairs a part of your daily routine and even this small amount of exercise and movement can help you in the long run. Especially if you use the stairs in the morning just before you start working. For those looking for a deeper stretch our Project Officer (and Yoga enthusiast), Vivien, recommends the yoga workout below. Give it a go: it's likely your mood will be significantly improved.
