The Border Mill is a small-scale alpaca fibre processing mill nestled in the beautiful Scottish Borders.
Location: Duns, Berwickshire
£7.85 per hour. Part-time, 20 hours per week for 12 weeks.
Ideal start date: January 2015
The intern will research and develop small-scale production techniques for making alpaca-filled duvets and pillows. This will involve some market research to identify sales potential and benchmark pricing; sourcing and costing supplies (e.g. organic fair trade cotton for the covers); designing and testing different techniques for manufacturing products in-house; and reviewing production costs.
Other tasks/projects may include:
• Performing a similar exercise to design and manufacture pet beds filled with alpaca fibre
• Contributing to a project to develop products using ‘rug yarn’ – a thick, soft, rope-like yarn made from lower quality alpaca fibre.
Although there will be an element of product design, the emphasis is more on developing products and small scale manufacturing processes, with the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in research & development and project management.
The ideal intern will have a background in textiles or similar creative design-based roles. You should have good craft skills, particularly in sewing and have a strong attention to detail. A creative individual, you should be interested in developing products, manufacturing and market research.
It is important that you are a strong team player who is good at problem-solving and uses their own initiative. The successful intern will be confident, reliable and enthusiastic.
