Towns Policy Officer Intern with Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP)

Scotland's Towns Partnership is Scotland’s largest towns’ collective; representing and promoting the diversity of our towns and places; and supporting those organisations and groups that have an interest in or ownership of them.

Location: Glasgow
£7.85 per hour. Full-time (35 hours per week) for an initial 3 months
Start date: week commencing 18 May 2015

The intern will work closely with the Chief Officer and support staff of Scotland’s Towns Partnership as well as supporting the policy work of Prof Richard Kerley at the Centre for Scottish Public Policy (CSPP). There may also be further research undertaken for the Cities Alliance and Federation of Small Business in relation to towns.

Within this role your key tasks will be to:
• Assisting and supporting with the CSPP Small Towns Policy Group. This policy group will be tasked with horizon scanning and ensuring political leaders and support agencies are aware of major policy issues for towns. The intern will facilitate this group, arrange meetings, prepare reports and agendas and promote the outcomes / minutes / reports on the STP web portal
• Assisting with the developing collaboration between Scotland's Towns, CSPP and the Cities Alliance. The intern will help with arranging meetings of this group, securing resources for project activity and undertake research.
• Helping to establish the structure and support mechanisms for Scotland's Small and Rural Towns network under the STP banner. This will involve setting up meetings, taking minutes, undertaking research, marketing and promotional content for STP web and partnership development.
• Assisting with the developing work to support the SLAED Place Group.
• Identifying market gaps throughout this work and undertake primary and secondary research and engagement.
• Any other relevant research as requested by STP or partners

Additional work will include helping the team to source and secure funding for STP, writing funding applications, assisting with events, developing case studies and other general marketing duties as required.

(This role is on a self-employed basis. Please note that you will be invoicing Adopt an Intern as a freelance/consultant. This is a very simple, uncomplicated process. You will also be advised to register as self-employed with HMRC if you are not already registered. Please note, students in Scotland on a Tier 4 Visa are not permitted to be self-employed and therefore will not be considered for this role.)


Requirements

We require a confident graduate with a background in an economic, business, marketing or social policy/science field. You should have proven policy and research capabilities, initiative and drive, good presentation and report writing skills and a desire and passion to improve the outlook for Scotland's Towns, for the residents, businesses, shoppers and visitors alike. It would be beneficial to have a working knowledge of Scottish Economic Policy structures and activities such a BiDs, Business support etc.

You will be a dynamic graduate with a mature outlook, strongly motivated, able to work independently, and within a team, under tight deadlines and eager to adjust to flexible working hours. You will have the ability to identify funding sources. Experience of application writing and fund raising would be highly beneficial.

You should be a strong communicator, able to produce case studies and communicate well with external agencies and media. You will have skills in community engagement and an ability to apply concepts of market segmentation and customer targeting. Strong motivation and initiative are vital in business/social interactions on behalf of STP.
