AAI wins SME Employer of the Year at the 2019 Scottish Diversity Awards
The Scottish Diversity Awards aim to acknowledge those who believe in an inclusive and diverse Scotland.
The black-tie event took place on Thursday, February 28, at The Trades Hall, located in Glasgow’s Merchant City. The awards showcased not only those who believe in diversity, but more importantly those who have actively contributed to achieving equality in their business by treating everyone equally and giving them fair opportunities, regardless their background, gender, religion or economic status.
Nominations came from social media polls, with AAI securing votes for inclusive employment practices and focussed projects around disability, racial and gender diversity and for supporting the Scottish Government's women returners agenda.
There were many credible finalists, including AAI employers Cornerstone, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Radiant and Brighter, Zero Waste Scotland, Virgin Money UK, Diageo, Hey Girls, Edinburgh Airport, Neatebox Ltd, East Renfrewshire Council, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Government, The Royal Bank of Scotland, and ScotRail.
AAI was nominated for Empowerment Champion Award 2019 and SME Employer of the Year, taking home the latter. Operations Manager Tim Street was on-hand to pick up the award.
"For years now, behind the scenes, we've been encouraging employers to embrace diversity and to hire for potential. Supporting people from different backgrounds is so important for a productive workplace.
We recommend candidates from all walks of life, but they all bring enthusiasm, talent and a willingness to show what a success they can make of a job opportunity."
AAI's CEO Joy Lewis reflected on the past 12 months and what the award means for AAI;
"When I started Adopt an Intern in late 2009 the priority was fighting the culture of unpaid internships, providing opportunities for people from all socio-economic backgrounds, not only those who could afford to work for free. Quite organically, over the years, we've attracted diversity in our audience through championing transparent, open recruitment practices.
More recently we've focussed our efforts on inclusive employment and diversity with our projects Back to Work, Disabling Barriers and Diversity Works. This award is a lovely reminder that we're on the right path and that our work needs to continue."
