Erected in 1875 the former Dryfesdale Public Old School building has been at the heart of the local community for over 140 years.
In 1903 the building became home to Lockerbie Academy until the 1960s when the Academy moved to more modern premises. The building then served as the local primary school. In 1988, in the aftermath of the Lockerbie Disaster, it became Head Quarters for the investigation. Dumfries and Galloway Councils architects, social work and community education department operated out of the building until 2010 when it was decided by the council that the building was “surplus to requirements”.
As part of the process of disposing of the building it was necessary to determine whether there was any local community interest in obtaining it. At a public meeting in early 2013 it was clear that not only was there an interest in retaining the building but there was a growing need for a flexible community space in Lockerbie that could be used by a range of local groups. This would not only serve Lockerbie but the surrounding area. Since then a committee was formed and they have been investigating how the community could take control of this significant building. They have obtained funding to carry out a feasibility study which is on-going at the moment.
Working as a Community Research Officer with the committee you will help support this ongoing project. Initial tasks will include but will not be limited to:
• Community liaison
• Stake holder engagement
• Contributing to funding applications
• Contributing to the business plan
• Researching potential funding streams
• Collating information and gathering statistics
• Attending committee meetings
• Other ad hoc tasks as required
The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level with a background in business, social sciences, marketing, communications or other relevant subject. Candidates must be computer literate with good communication skills (both verbal and written) and strong organisation and time management skills. Candidates who can demonstrate excellent research skills, including experience of collating statistics and writing reports would be highly regarded.
You should have an interest in business development within the third sector and be familiar with the concept of researching and applying for funding streams. Experience of organising events and meetings would be highly beneficial.
