An Lanntair is a multi arts venue – at one and the same time a contemporary art gallery, a theatre, a cinema, a concert hall, a platform for poetry and literature, a studio – every space is stretched to showcase the arts in multiple forms. Encompassing it all, we pride ourselves in presenting an inspirational programme of excellence that engages and illuminates its audiences. Our work stretches across a national and indeed international platform, yet our distinctiveness lies in being ‘of the place’, rooted in who we are, and the creativity of Gaelic and the Outer Hebrides takes centre stage. In October 2005, following a ten year campaign, our magnificent, nationally significant new arts centre on the Stornoway waterfront was opened. Our facility includes a 220 seat auditorium, gallery space, office space, shop, bar and restaurant facilities. The building was one of the largest ever arts developments in the Highlands and Islands and is of key strategic importance nationally for the arts and culture of the Outer Hebrides.
About this role
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to work with the An Lanntair archive, which covers almost 30 years of Art, Music and Theatre events. The candidate will be given training by a qualified archivist to work through and document the collections, as well as digitise An Lanntair’s extensive image archives. Training will be given in the operation of scanning equipment, conservation and cataloguing of objects.
Reporting to the Curator Hebrides Contemporary Arts & Artist Support Coordinator, the key tasks will be to:
• Catalogue the objects held in An Lanntair’s physical archive
• Digitise An Lanntair’s extensive image archives
• Write blog entries about objects in the collection
• Upload the objects to an online resource
• Work with the Head of Visual Arts to interpret the collection
• Other administrative tasks
This is a fantastic opportunity for a candidate to gain invaluable experience in the creative and arts industries. Along with the opportunity to experience working on this project, the successful candidate will also receive training and plenty of other opportunities to develop their own skills and experience. It is an exciting chance for any ambitious person to gain experience in the creative industries, as well as gain direct experience in the Heritage & Archive sector. This placement would therefore be ideal for anyone looking to go on to study for a museums & archive qualification.
The ideal candidate will be a graduate in a relevant academic background with an interest in the archives , arts or heritage field. You will have strong numerical, written and oral communication skills as well as good knowledge of relevant IT Systems. You must be able to prioritise workload effectively, use initiative and work unsupervised to deadlines.
This position requires accuracy and attention to detail – you should be able to produce work of the highest quality. We are looking for an enthusiastic person with some skills in photography, and some experience in administrative work.
