AAI Alumni no. 1
Iain was AAI's first-ever intern back in 2010 when he took on the role of Copywriter Intern with Young Company Finance.
As AAI celebrates 1500 interns in 2019, we thought we'd check in with No. 1 and see how his graduate opportunity changed his life.
I had the privilege of being AAI's very first intern back in 2010, and I'm delighted to hear that the organisation has now helped 1500 graduates into work. And, of course, to be part of the celebrations!
AAI gave me my first big break in the world of work, as a copywriting intern with Young Company Finance. I was working part-time in Levi's on Princes Street, Edinburgh at the time I received Joy's call, so I practically jumped around the room at the prospect of a job where I could use my degree!
Since then I've worked in editorial and corporate positions for companies in Scotland, the Middle East and Australia.
I'm now a subeditor at DC Thomson, one of the leading media organisations in the UK.
It's clear to me that none of this would have been possible without the experience I gained through Adopt An Intern.
After graduating at the beginning of the recession in 2010, I needed something to help me stand out from thousands of other qualified candidates looking for work in a tough market. My intern position did just that.
It let me prove that I had a number of useful attributes -- like the ability to write to a high standard, and to meet tough deadlines -- but most importantly, it let me prove that I was employable.
I'm grateful for the opportunity I was given, and I'm happy to see that so many others have also benefited from Adopt An Intern's good work.
Here's to the next 1500!
