Job hunting experience - Job hunting was stressful and intimidating! With a degree in English Literature it was in many ways up to me to forge a career path. I was determined to find a well-paid job opportunity that would provide applicable experience and skills outside of academia, and develop my professional profile. An internship with Absolute Escapes was the perfect way to kick-start my career and provided me with a chance to prove myself.
Roles and responsibilities - As Operations Assistant I quickly became an integral part of the team. My responsibilities covered all aspects of managing tour bookings, including customer service, negotiating with suppliers, researching holidays and writing detailed information packs. Extensive training was provided alongside personal mentoring. The guidance I received throughout the process was invaluable.
Where are you now? - Upon completion of my internship with Absolute Escapes I was offered a full-time position at the company, which I gratefully accepted. Since then I have taken on more responsibilities, work assignments and travel opportunities, in the form of research trips throughout Great Britain.
The picture of me and the reindeer was taken on a research trip to Speyside and Cairngorms National Park. Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer is found in the Cairngorm Mountains so I went to meet them and update our sightseeing notes. I also walked the Speyside Way and drank quite a bit of whisky - it was a fantastic experience!
When the weather is beautiful we sometimes leave the office and go exploring walking routes nearby - officially in the name of research of course.
The job is challenging, engaging and unique, combining strong academic skills with adventure and customer service. I am very thankful for the opportunity Adopt an Intern gave me.
