About the Company
The Cairngorms National Park was established in September 2003 and the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) became fully operational at the same time – taking on the statutory powers necessary to ensure successful and sustainable development of the area.
The CNPA is designed to be an enabling organisation, promoting partnership working, and giving leadership to all those involved in the Cairngorms. The Park Authority does not duplicate the work of other organisations, such as the enterprise agencies or Scottish Natural Heritage, but is there to ensure that there is a joined-up approach to projects and initiatives that help to meet the four aims of the Park which are:
1. To conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area
2. To promote sustainable use of the natural resources of the area
3. To promote understanding and enjoyment (including enjoyment in the form of recreation) of the special qualities of the area by the public

The Cairngorms National Park has many tracks on moorland and hills that are used by estates and land managers for vehicle access for many activities. Many have been present over long periods of time. New hill tracks (and some existing hill tracks) can have a significant impact on landscape character in particular and the CNPA wants to use all the tools available to manage the development of any new tracks as well as reduce the impact of existing tracks.
To help improve its ability to manage the National Park, the CNPA needs more accurate information on where there are currently tracks on hills across the National Park. The CNPA is looking for an intern to make comparisons of aerial photography with ordnance survey maps and planning data to build a record of the extent and form of existing tracks across the Cairngorms National Park to create a spatial GIS dataset.
Guided by the Head of Planning and Communities, your main tasks will include:
• Analysing ordnance survey digital map data
• Analysing digital aerial photography data
• Reviewing historical photographic data or other reports of track development
• Establishing a methodology for classification tracks and associated metadata (including size, method of construction, consents in place, date of construction etc.)
• Creating a digital dataset of tracks with associated metadata using ESRI ArcGIS software
• Developing proposals for keeping the data up to date
At the end of this internship, you will produce a digital dataset of existing tracks with associated metadata and produce a short summary report of the work with recommendations.
Some field visits will be undertaken but the majority of the work is desk-based
All post holders are required to be flexible with regards their job description so that the organisation can adapt to new opportunities and priorities over time. The post holder may be required to undertake other work as necessitated by the requirements of the organisation and in keeping with the grade of the post.

CNPA is looking for an intern with a passion for the Scottish outdoors who has an understanding of Scottish hills, footpaths and vehicle tracks.
The following skills/experience are deemed essential:
• Experience of GIS systems and creation of accurate spatial datasets
• Understanding of Scottish hills, footpaths and vehicle tracks
• An eye for detail and ability to analyse detailed aerial photography
• Well organised with a systematic approach to work
• Able to work unsupervised and on own initiative
• Experience of research
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
• Enthusiastic and self-motivated approach to work
• Demonstrable experience of organising and prioritising a busy workload to successfully achieve objectives
• Demonstrable experience of working as an effective team member
• Good IT skills in all areas Word, Excel, PowerPoint skills
